MARTIN MITCHELL - ARTIST

ARTIST BIO
Martin Mitchell - Artist
I am a self-taught artist, initially addicted to watercolour, loving its translucency and unpredictability. However, I am moving, as many artists do as they get older, to a more abstract style and introducing more acrylic paint.
I still like to sketch and continue to search for a loose confident style in all media.

I am a retired doctor and a keen golfer, gardener and a regular at St Mary’s. I am a widower with two children and two grandchildren.

I have painted seriously since retirement now some nine years ago, and have recently had a studio built above my garage.

I am attracted by most subjects and so produce a wide variety of pictures in a range of styles but hope to continue moving to a more ‘abstract-realist’ style.

Artists who have influenced me and continue to do so are watercolourists such as: John Blockley, Charles Reid, Ted Nuttall, Simon Fletcher, Mel Stabin, and David Howell.
And more recently by the more abstract painters such as Fred Cuming, Peter Wileman, Hiroshi Matsumoto and Stanley Bielen... and of course not forgetting J M W Turner!

PAINTING IS THE SILENCE OF THOUGHT AND THE MUSIC OF SIGHT

A PAINTING REQUIRES A LITTLE MYSTERY, SOME VAGUENESS, AND SOME FANTASY. WHEN YOU MAKE YOUR MEANING PERFECTLY PLAIN YOU END UP BORING PEOPLE

IF YOU COULD SAY IT IN WORDS, THERE WOULD BE NO REASON TO PAINT
